If you are connected via a stand alone Modem furnished by your Internet Service Provider then all you need is a multiport Router and you simply connect an ethernet cable from your ISP's Modem to the router you purchase and plug in your computers to any of the LAN Ports.
It will be a little different if your computers have wireless cards but all routers come with step by step instructions.

I take it when you say modem you mean DSL modem, and I don't know what relevance it being from or in Virgina has to do with any thing!

Connecting 2 computers to 1 internet connection is not hard all you need are the following:

1. Correct length of Cat5e Cable from both computers to your modem, router, or switch

2. If your modem only has one RJ-45 connection, which is possible you will need a network switch a simple 4 port switch will do just fine, found here: http://www.jlcustompc.com/zo5etsw.html

3. Connect the modem Cat5e cable to the back of the switch to the number 1 port then connect the PC Cat5e cables to port 2 and 3

4. Make sure its all plugged in and your good to go!

Cables can be found here!

If you are using a standard "dial-up" modem forget the router...

you can set it up using a CAT5e cross over cable and enable "internet connect sharing" via Windows.

If it's a DSL modem and its made by Westell you can use a switch (around 30 bucks at Staples) because most if not all of the Westell modems come with the router function built-in.
