I have a 95 Mercury Grand Marquis. I did a diagnostic and found the trouble code which read "system to lean (bank 1&2)". What does this mean?

Somethiing in the fuel control system is wrong causing both banks of cylinders to be lean, generally this rules out injectors, plugs, wires, O2 sensors, ect since it is happening to both banks. Your problem is either a bad MAF sensor, fuel pressure too low because of a pump, clogged filter or bad regulator or a possible vacuum leak into the manifold. This engine has a rubber T in the vacuum line from the PCV valve on passenger side of the engine, these have a habbit of cracking causing this concern.

Lean condition means that the car engine is not being fed enough fuel. The opposite would be "TOO Rich" which means the car is being fed too much fuel.

It is normal for car's computer to make small adjustments (in my Audi - up to 10%) for variation in worn parts. But at certain point it will signal Check Engine light.

Lean condition is very dangerous for the engine. If the car starts to knock (ping, detonate), you will get expensive engine piston / valve damage.

You might have low fuel pressure or faulty mass air flow (MAF) sensor. Try just cleaning the MAF sensor using a MAF sensor spray cleaner (Don't use a carburator cleaner or anything that leaves a residue). This is the cheapest ($6) and also the easiest.

If you have low fuel pressure, it can be any one of the components in the fuel delivery (fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel line blocked, fuel pressure regulator, even fuel injector (but not if you have general fuel delivery problem).
