i want to buy a small pick-up; which of these two are most
economical to run- brake and other parts ect- and are both
equal or not in terms of poss maintenance jobs that i can
carry out?

the ford is better in every way..
it is cheaper to own and operate, more fun to drive
and will out last the Toyota...
and you won't be embarrassed when people see you in it...

One is better engineered, better built and more reliable.
One costs less to maintain.
One has dramatically greater resale value.

That one is the Toyota. I work across the street from a plant that makes the Ranger. That vehicle is so popular that the plant has dropped to a single shift, still takes frequent 3-week layoffs due to oversupply and is going to close permanently next year. I'll miss watching them drive the trucks off the line and over the rumble pad though. That's a stretch of bumpy pavement they use to shake all the loose nuts and bolts out. Where these nuts and bolts come from, who knows.

On the other hand, dealers will practically give away a Ranger so you can probably get a better deal on one.

well the toyota would be better on gas and the ford would be cheper to fix and buy parts for.
