My favorite novel is a "hammock book" (where you sit in a hammock and waste the day away reading) is Clive Barker's Galilee. I recommend it because -- even though it's a Clive Barker fantasy -- it's got a sweeping scope and even a little bit of romance....

Probably The Catcher in the Rye. It makes me laugh but it's so deep, and truly connects to human experience. I've read it about a half a dozen times.
