Thermal grease, thermal paste or thermal goop is a semi-solid substance that is applied between the processor cover (or heatspreader) and the heatsink (or cooler) to enhance heat transfer from processor to heatsink (then to air). The popular premium thermal pastes are Artic Silver 5 and Zalman STG-1. The regular ones are mostly silicone grease.

It is a substance that goes between a processor or high temp computer chip and the heat sink to assist in thermal transfer. You may have seen it ,, it usually is a white thick "grease" and is to be used very sparingly.. just enough to help heat transfer.
