When one finds oneself in a position of leadership, one should learn the facts of the situation, set an achievable goal, communicate that goal to the others, make sure they understand what they are expected to do and LEAD!

Avoid tunnel vision, constantly update and make sure the goal still makes sense. While it is Ok to seek the opinions of your fellow teammates, you are not taking a consensus. Consensus seeking is the abdication of leadership. You must make the best decision you can with all the knowledge and experience you have. Then LEAD!

When someone makes a mistake, take that person aside in private and discuss the problem and what you expect the solution to be. This is an occasion to teach not to punish. Firing someone is easy. Getting them to perform is leadership. LEAD!

If the team fails, the leader takes the blame. If it happens on your watch, you make no excuses and accept the blame. You do not point fingers or pass the buck. It is damned difficult to do. But it will earn you respect from your team and from your superiors.

If the team succeeds, the leader gives the credit to the team. Any recognition or awards are accepted on behalf of the the team not to you as a leader. The team includes you; you are part of the team.

The key word there is to LEAD. Use the word "we" instead of "I" when working things out and give positive encouragements to your members. Make sure you have plenty of patients along the way.

True Leaders are people that make you want to do things not make you do them.
Leaders command respect, never demand them
A leader has to know himself, his people, and his task.

True leaders create more leaders not more followers, and they certainly never hire yes men.
