To get you to achieve a higher level, so you can have unlimited e-mail. Remember, this is a game, and the higher the level the more perks you get. People who have achieved a higher level get little perks like unlimited answers and questions. Keep on answering, and you will obtain the next level, then you have more flexibility, to play the game. It would not be fair if everybody had the same options, as the people on a higher level........You can always use your personal e-mail, to write to someone, you do not need Y/A, to do that.

I wondered the same. I found the answer in a Q asked about a year ago.
It's to keep SPAM down. Seems SPAMers were using Y!A to contact people.

Maybe to prevent harassing emails by trolls. That would be my guess. I had a guy email me all day spewing garbage and personal insults until I blocked him.
