I read a book which suggested making your house a place of "yes" rather than "no". That hit me as genius. Far easier to make your house safe to explore than chase a kid around saying "don't touch", "put that down", "no". So we stored away all the expesnive or breakable knicknacks, raised everything dangerous or breakable to high shelves, removed the coffee table, and close off rooms where he can get into trouble (close the doors if your home layout allows or gate them off). The only thing we have had to teach him "no" about is the TV and DVD player etc. which we don't have a closed cabinet for.

We have tried to have interesting things for him to look at and touch and hear. Art prints, carvings, different textured fabrics, wooden puzzles and brainteaser type things (pieces large enough to prevent choking!), and all different types of music. We have always named and discussed everything he takes any interest in "That's a blue fuzzy blanket", "That picture has clouds in a blue sky with a house", "This is Mozart" etc. We have always talked about what we are doing, whether it be dishes or a diaper change. We allow him to be messy in his high chair as food is a wonderful thing to explore with hands as well as with his mouth.

He has several drawers and cabinets in the kitchen that are safe for him to explore filled with plastic bowls, wooden spoons, wicker baskets, little boxes, wooden and plastic blocks, toothbrushes from the dollar store, old phones, wrapping paper and paper towel tubes....whatever. He loves to explore, fill containers with blocks, pretend to cook, pretend to call people, etc.

Also, in addition to reading to him we bought one of those "lift the flap" Little People books. He brings it to us every night, and has for 6 months now, and can point out/name every animal and object, make the animal sounds, knows what is under each flap and even which page it is on when we ask "Where's the mice/bunny/fish" . He is learning, as well as we have an enjoyable ritual of his own devising.

He has a large vocab for an 18 mo old, and is learning several new words a week.

Best of luck, and enjoy your baby! They are little for such a short time!

music (any kind, doesn't have to be classical or child-centric)

colors (bright primary colors work well to catch the baby's eyes and promote motor development)

shapes (lots of different shapes of toys and soft blocks to experement with)

YOU!!!!! (you really are the only thing your baby needs. Talk to her all the time. Even when you're doing the dishes or cleaning the house. Your attention will do more than anything else you can put or do in your house to stimulate her.)

When I need a free minute to get things done around the house I put the baby in the exersaucerz(good investment) and pop in a Baby Einstein DVD and they love it.. ! Plus my 3 yr. old points out what everything is for the baby and they laugh and watch. It's usually a special treat I save for around nap time.... Seasame Street is good too..Even for babies.... I also put on classical music in the nursery during nap time, it has a nice calming effect and we play games on the computer... All in all it's baby's interaction with you that helps in cognititve development..

Play some great classical music.
I would suggest Bach: Brandenburg Concerto and Handel: Water Music.
