There is a constant knocking from the engine and loss of rpm's. Almost like the engine is twitching. Also, when I am driving, it shuts off for no reason at all. When I try to accelerate, it acts like part of the engine is tied down and it sputters and knocks and will not allow me to go as fast as it used to.

How loud is the knock? The louder the knock, the more expensive the repair is. Things that cause the engine to knock are: a bent connecting rod(very loud knock), a piston pin (double knock), spark knock (pinging/detenation), or it can be valve train related (ticking sound). Definately check the oil. Low oil can you cause to have a spun bearing or valve train problems.

Is it a performance car that requires high octane fuel? If so, could be that someone put regular fuel in it....

Whatever the cause, best to get a mechanic to look at it before you do some serious damage (fingers crossed it's not badly damaged already...)
