DSL is compatible with Windows 98 and it is best to connect the DSL adapter (or router - if you are using one) to the Network Interface Card with an Ethernet cable. It is important to use Internet Security Software. At the very least consider an antivirus program and a firewall (and adding an antispyware program would be a great idea). You may also want to stop using Internet Explorer and switch to Firefox or Opera. Microsoft is no longer providing security patches for Windows 98 and is no longer updating Internet Explorer for Windows 98. MIcrosoft is no longer supporting Windows 98 at all and many other software companies have dropped support for it, also. You will notice that many of the programs that do support Windows 98 will support only Windows 98 Second Edition (or SE). If you want to find out which version of Windows 98 you are using do the following: Click the Start button, click on Run, and type the word "winver" (without the quotes). If you want to learn more about using Windows 98 and securing it check out NetSquirrel and if you want to find out more about using a modern, currently supported operating system with an older computer you may want to read about Xubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04 (addresses are provided in the sources list).

It actually might be hard to get it to work. However, if you have problems, get a cable/DSL router, it will take care of the dialing, and you can simply use ethernet (or wireless) in 98.
XP is oh so much easier!
