A divorce is ending a marriage. An annulment is ending a marriage as if it never happened. Of course there can have been sex. There can also have been children. There can also have been a 30 year marriage.

When youve been married such a short period of time days or weeks only that you dont have to get a divorce, you get an annulment instead, well ive heard that if the marriage was consumated (meaning you had sex) then you have to get a divorce but ask a lawyer too be sure.

if it was a catholic wedding and when divorced by law, you are still married in the eyes of the church but you can apply to the Vatican city for an annulment.

It's a statement that you were never validly married. If you've not had sex, the marriage can be annulled for non-consummation, but there are other reasons that could apply.
