My old desktop decided to die, and it crashes no matter what i do. So I wanted a new PC, and I wanted a laptop. I was thinking about buying the Sony Vaio VGN-AR41E which is due to come out at the end of the week or so. My brother said it was good. It costs 1,200 euro, which I thought was quite a lot, but reasonable as it is a Vaio laptop. Does anybody know anything about this laptop, or have any other suggestions? I live in Switzerland and I'm purchasing the laptop in Germany, hence it should be a laptop which i can get. Here is the website of Sony for the data of the laptop:

I rather have a Windows. The school computers use windows, and if I wanted to send my work from one to another, it would be easier to combine. I have a strict budget and 1200 euro is the most i can spend.
To WOOT fire fly fan WOOT: The service of Sony in Europe is very good. My friend has a Vaio as well and she didnt have to pay a lot for service repairs. But thanks for your suggestions.

You must spend your money for the best brand.

As I know HP and Dell are the best in laptops for a long time and they are very reliable too. I trusted HP and I bought a HP laptop 2 years before, and still like the day I bought it. Didn't even have to service it at least once up to now.

I recommend you to buy a HP (with experience) or Dell laptop.

On www.hp.com you can even customize your laptop. And also you can check the price.

Personally, I'd go with a Macbook or maybe an HP if I had to choose a Windows platform. Sony's are stylish, but their support and service sucks and if your computer dies somehow, they'll charge you ridiculous prices for a manufacturer's repair. My friend had a Sony and his hard drive stopped working, but Sony had the nerve to charge 400 dollars for a hard drive that costs less than 100... 300 dollars in service charges? A bit ridiculous. A Macbook/Macbook Pro is a reliable and high quality machine, and you can get one for 1200. I think Apple would be the better purchase and unless you've got some good reason why you should get the awfully designed Windows Vista, I'd say get a Macbook in October when OS X Leopard is released.

I just spent 6 hours over the weekend helping my friend pick a laptop. Vaios generally are a great choice, and this one's specs are no exception. However, it does weigh about 4kg - hefty! Mine is ~3.5kg and already not so fun to lug around. Consider the situations you'll want to use it in. Oh, and I'm really unexcited about Vista.

Other brands: Lenovos are excellent (reliable, well-built) but sport a strikingly boring design. Dell are mediocre, bulky, and amazingly cheap. HP's are kinda in the middle.

I don't see a point in rushing to buy a product that's just off to the market. There are plenty of models with competing specs out there, and the longer they've been out, the lower the prices are likely to be.
The best thing you can do is go to retail stores and take a look yourself. Do you like the screen? Is the keyboard comfortable?

One last thing, make sure you can get service in Switzerland with the German warranty.

So I haven't told you which laptop to buy, but hopefully gave you some right criteria to make a wise choice.

The Sony's always seem to be nicely made. I would highly recommend Sony in general. Good choice.
