I am going to have to say no, they are not the same. The discomfort from a tampon is just temporary for a few seconds and then goes away. Sex, at least you first and second time, is painfull. Depends on your tolerances for pain if you can handle it better than most. Tampons just stretch, sex tears. Now, sex tears only the first time. I would not be scared of having sex but just don't do it to just do it. Stay a virgin as long as you can because as much as sex is good...it also brings a whole different world of problems.

I'm in utter disbelief that so many men decided to answer your question.
Tampons don't and shouldn't hurt if you're using them properly. Buy the smallest kind (either regular or junior) and practice when you have your period.
Sex can be painful for me if I'm not lubricated. The first time I just felt sore (like I had run 5 miles the day before) but I didn't have any pain. You'll also want to use a condom, so buy the lubricated ones with spermicide. That will help out in the lubrication department.
And guys-- don't answer these questions please. You have no first-hand experience. So even if you think your girlfriend tells you everything....these girls want answers from women who've been through it.

Back in the days of yore, when the world was young and I was still a virgin...
I tried to use a tampon for the first time and it hurt so badly that I cried and the PE teacher thought I was crying because I got my periods. She said 'Oh honey, we all have to go through them, I know it sucks.' <.<
Seriously though. Try inserting your finger (trim your nails and make sure its clean!) in there and explore a little, if you can. I couldn't because it was too painful for me, but do try, before you use a tampon. (I STILL don't feel comfortable with tampons.)
I think it is less than when you have sex for the first time, losing my virginity was painful for me too, but it was still a great experience, and it gets better and better every time you do it, untill it doesn't hurt. Just make sure the man (or woman) you are with is considerate, loving and kind, and take things very slowly, with no pressure. Good luck in the future, my young padwan.

I've never been penetrated, and I've never used tampons.
I have always felt reluctant to use tampons, because I have the sensation that it "scrapes" the vagina walls...
Anyway, a penis is a much larger and longer body, and so I'm sure its pressure is felt more.
But the discomfort of the first time in particular is certainly lessened to some extent because of the vagina's natural lubrication while a woman has sex...
(Pardon my English... This is not my native language, and while at times, I think I'm fluent in it, other times I have some difficulty expressing myself in more specific contexts...)

No in most cases tampon use just stretches the hymen but sex will most likely break it. Tampon use could break it however, in which case you should have little to no discomfort having sex for the first time.

I lost my hymen long before I lost my virginity. But my first time was still uncomfortable (physically) in some respects. I equated it to stubbing your toe for a quality of pain. Remember you vagina is a muscle that can and will stretch.
Tampons should never hurt you if you inserted them correctly.

Depending on how tight you are, they could both be uncomfortable. Sex will hurt more, because there is tearing going on in there. I don't mean to scare you, but just make sure you tell your partner to be gentle the first time.

TAMPONS DON'T HURT! As long as you insert them properly you should not feel them at all. Just follow the instructions in the box and you will be fine.
