Sociologists have been fretting for decades about outdated institutions--the Church, the family, any form of government they can think of, the legal system . . . Of course, these systems change and adapt to meet society's needs. For example,
------Society will always need a FAMILY structure for the caring and raising of children (however imperfectly). During the Victorian era, children grew up in broken homes because one or both parents often died before their children reached adulthood. An extended family proved the solution to this problem. During the late 20th century, the divorce rate in most Western countries rose dramatically. The family still existed, but serial monogamy became the norm in about half the population. Homosexuals came out into the open, seeking to normalize their unions.
------Society (for the most part) still relies on some form of RELIGION, although church attendance has drastically dropped in most Western industrialized countries. While congregations once filled the pews of mainland Protestant churches and the Roman Catholic Church, an increasing percentage of believers are turning to either evangelical faiths, particularly in Latin America, or are exploring different religious traditions, such as Islam.
------EDUCATION needs some drastic retinkering since assessment tools, such as standardized tests, show that contemporary school children learn imperfectly at best. Adult education, in the meanwhile, has become more self-paced and user-friendly as online courses have surplanted brick and mortar campuses. Tuition for college students at both private and public institutions is outrageous, but at the same time, students are paying what the market will bear.
------A GOVERNMENT reflects the society that controls it because at least in democracies (or countries that prefer to bill themselves that way) the voters choose who is in power and for how long. Throughout history that has meant that when a country's government moves too far to the right or the left, it stablizes itself by moving in the opposite direction.
------Didn't Shakespeare counsel, "Kill all the lawyers"? For centuries, LAWYERS have been the people everyone else loved to hate except when they needed them. So what else is new?
------ROYALTY (both hereditary and manufactured in Hollywood) will always be fodder for tabloid newspapers or their electronic equivalents because most of us like to fantasize about what it would be like to have seemingly unlimited wealth, power, and influence.
