If you want a good whodunnit I would recommend one of the Janet Laurence 'Canaletto' Books (real page turners).
For science fiction/humour you cannot do better than Terry Pratchett (Postal is brilliant).
For an excellent biography I'd highly recommend Kate Adie's The Kindness of Strangers - an impressive lady who has been shot three times in the course of her career as well as getting minor ailments like amoebic dysentry and Congo-Crimea haeorrhagic fever. A very funny book as well (mentioning for instance the difficulties of getting knickers and bra on in a small tent while conducting a conversation with half a dozen male colleagues who are also wrestling with their underwear). You should read this.

[Have to admit though my wife got a bit sick of me sitting there reading this and chuckling away to myself].

For fluffy and easy going try Jilly Cooper books - she tells a fantastic story. For gritty drama and thrills Quintin Jardine's Bob Skinner series and for a bit of light releif the same author has written the Oz Blackstone series - all superb and page turning in their own way .

Other chick lit is Fiona Walker, Sophie Kinsella and Lesley Pearce

I'd highly recommend 'The Time Travellers Wife' by Audrey Niffenegger. It has a fantastic plot, and I couldn't put it down! Read it several times since, and it's still great after several reads.

Note; I've put a link to the plot summary on wikipedia, but if you're intending to read the book don't read the whole article - it tells you the ending.

If you like Patricia Cornwell you should try Kathy Reichs - similar sort of thing but I actually think Kathy Reich's books are better.

If you're ready for a challenge I recommend House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. It's a total mind-trip, but can be a little hard to follow if you're not paying attention.
