Just a quick point... Did your employer ask you to fill in a Pre-Employment Health Questionaire? And on your Application Form, did it ask for your Doctors details?

If you have signed either of these documents, you have already given your employer a legal right to obtain details from your GP.

Your employer can contact your GP all they want but all of your information is protected by patient doctor confidentiality. So the doctor would not be able to give any info concerning you. If they are that curious you can take a doctor note from your doctor stating you are in his care from sucha date to sucha date, but the note does not have to specify any details as to what you were seen for.

There's nothing to stop them contacting your Doctor however the Doctor or any surgery staff are not allowed to give out any information about you whatso ever as it is against data protection. If they did you could sue as it is very strict!

They can try, but the GP is not allowed to reveal any information about your medical condition or history. So it would be kind of pointless....

Your employer can only contact your GP with your written consent. Any other way and it is deemed to be illegal.

Robin is right, they'll only get information with your writen authorisation.

There could be something in your contract to say after a certain amount of time you will be asked for your consent.

Absolutely, yes they can! The doctor, however, will need your authorisation to reveal any information about you.

Your employer does NOT need your authorisation to approach your doctor.
