This isn't me, but i was talking to a friend yesterday who's m/wife let her check internally for herself...she said she felt something hard and smooth...she's about the same length gone as me (about 34 weeks)...i'm too scared to check myself ('m a wimp i think!) so i was wondering if anyone knew what that hard bump would be? sorry if it's an easy question....i'm very clueless with all things new as it's my first child :)

The cervix I reckon, why did she have an internal exam?
Our midwives tend to leave us be rather than 'fiddle' with us too much!
EDIT: You won't feel the baby's head unless the mum is in labour & her baby's on it's way down the birth canal.
Before labour, the cervix can be felt at the top of the v a g i n a, and you can establish, by touch, if the cervix is starting to open. Think of the womb like a balloon, with the 'blow-up end' as the cervix, the hole at end is closed and you can't insert a finger until it starts to dilate (Open).
I'ts hard to describe, but sorta makes sense in my head!!!!

Internal examinations (or vaginal examinations really) are very important in antenatal exanination. It ensures that the birth passage is fine for delivery and also give san idea of the state of the cervix which should stay shut till you are due. It slowly opens up in labour.
Doing a self- examination is useless in this respect; it should be done by a doctor or nurse .

Your doctor or midwife does not have to "let" you check yourself. It is your body and as long as you wash your hands well (before AND after) there is no danger (as long as you do not do it too often). It is much the same as women checking their cervix for mucous and position when TTC.
I am not certain what she was feeling, but it is wonderful for every woman to be familiar with her body.
Congratulations to both of you!

she probably felt her cevix, its isnt wise though however to try and feel the babies head as this usually means pushing a finger through the cervix to feel it, it can be dangerous and harmful as you dont know how to do it leave it to the professionals! good luck with the baby

maybe she felt a baby's head because she was already close to give birth.
If u want to try the same, do it, but Ur doctor can tell u more about this and tell u how close u r.

really the midwife should check out internal stuff. im on my 4th preg and never been offered an internal until delivery personally. i would not advise self internals just incase you scratch yourself 'up there'
