Books Like Cold Mountain

Why?
Do you want to avoid them?

I thought that the end of Cold Mountain was a bit of a let down after all the hype.

However, Lost Geography by Charlotte Bacon...I think is better
Cormac McCarthy's trilogy, starting with All the Pretty Horses is good, also, David Gutterson.

Try an American classic: Stephen Crane's "The Red Badge Of Courage." I also recommend "Ambrose Bierce's Civil War Stories," a masterpiece of macabre literature, strongly influenced by Edgar Allan Poe.

One of the most innovative and challenging books ever written "The Wave" (1929) by Evelyn Scott is set during the civil war - not exactly an airport bestseller though.
"The Wave, Scott's best novel, deals with the Civil War in an experimental narrative style attempting both epic sweep and accurate psychological analysis."

You could try Charles Frazier's follow-up 13 Moons. Or better yet The March by EL Doctorow. A truly epic and special novel set towards the end of the war.

I would also recommend Property by Valerie Martin

Hope this helps

Oh, how about "The Killer Angels" by Micheal Shaara and the prequel and sequel books by his son Jeff that turn his book into book two of a trilogy, "Gods and Generals" and "The Last Full Measure." Or maybe John Jakes North and South trilogy, "North and South," "Love and War," and "Heaven and Hell." Or "One Came Back {Un Revenant}" by Remi Tremblay and translated into english by Margaret S. Langford (it's about a French Canadian who served in the war).
