Why are things called inflammable when they are actually flammable?

The origin is based on "night fall" or "fall of darkness"; the metaphor was the fall of the curtain of night or darkness, and the literal was "after darkness has set in" or "after darkness has fallen upon the land". This was later shortenend, as is often the case, to "after dark".
