The two types of DVD will have two different country codes preventing them from being exchanged easily on DVD players of both countries. But, after that, British TV-signal is PAL and American signal is NTSC. Basically, PAL is horizontal lines at a higher rows-per-inch density, with a slower frames-per-second. NTSC is vertical scan lines, with a higher frames-per-second and a signal for subtitles.

Tiger and Splodge: Ha! You guys go great with my coffee!

On to my answer. US dvds are region 1 and UK dvds are region 2. This is due to pricing, and what the market will bear in that region of the world. I could buy, say, Superman Returns for much less in China, than here in the States-this is why regions were made-so people wouldn't be able to get the same dvd from a country for a cheaper price. Region 1 dvds will not play in any other region, nor will region 2 (or 3, 4, 5, etc), unless you have a region-free dvd player, like me.

Americans run on region 1 and us Brits run on region 2 so its always a good idea to by a multi region DVD player/recorder. I order DVDs from the states all the time, & some Japanese films are region 1, too.

If you mean the compatibility with our DVD machines.
USA are on NTSC broadcast system, we are on PAL broadcast system.
Which means you cannot play American DVD's in a UK machine and you cannot play a UK DVD in an American machine.
Simple.

most Region 2 players (UK) can be unlocked to play multiple region discs by a software code, enabling them to play US (Region 1) or other world region discs...don't have a region 1 player to find out if it works the other way round :)
