G'day,
2 options:
1. Taxi, will cost you abt $35-$45 from Airport to city
2. Skybus (www.skybus.com.au) to Spencer Street Terminal in the city.
Hope this helps. Enjoy your trip and welcome to Melbourne. Just remember to bring plenty of warm jackets :)

Yes there are buses, trains and trams and there are underground stations in the city. It's called the "city loop" which consists of Flagstaff, Melbourne central and Parliament stations. Melbourne central is where a lot of people tend to get off. You can buy tickets at any train stations. Some of them are premium meaning that there is a ticketing salesperson at the station from first train to last 7 days a week. Some stations however don't have ticketing booths and you have to purchase them from the machine. When you purchase a metcard MAKE SURE you put it in the validating machine. If you don't then you will get fined $160 if caught by a ticketing officer. They're very strict when it comes to tickets. If you're under 17 then you can purchase a concession fair WITHOUT proof of concession. If you're over 17, you need to purchase a FULL FARE. Which does cost a little more but it's worth getting in case you don't want to get fined. The zones. Zone 1 consists of the city area and also some inner suburbs and zone 2 is the outer suburbs of which the transport is less frequent and closer to the end of the railway/bus/tram lines. Full fares cost $11 for an all-day zone 1 & 2. If you're going around the city then all you need is a City saver metcard which costs abour 3 maybe 4 dollars the most but overall Melbourne's train network is pretty cheap. If you have any problems with train tickets then ask a staff member at a station if one is available or ask a person for assistance. More than likely they'll be happy to assist. Since you're staying in South Yarra. The train station shouldn't be too far and it's about 2-5 stops away from the city (depends if the train is going through loop or not). You may also take a tram if you wish.

There is an "Airport Shuttle Bus" which takes you into Central Melbourne; and actually to your hotel. It costs around AU$20 per person.

I caught the skybus to and from the airport on a recent holiday to Melbourne, and it was really easy. Everyone was very helpful and it was easy to spot the buses. It's a nice comfortable ride to the city too. Very cold in Winter though - wear your jacket.

you can buy a ticket on the 'sky bus' that will take you directly to Southern cross train station in spencer street Melbourne CBD. from there, there are trams, trains and busses that will take you everywhere.
The sky bus is the red bus and ticketscan be purchased at the sky bus booth in the arrivals section of the international terminal

You can either take a taxi ride or you can take a bus route. Once you get to your destination i would recommend you take either a tram or a train around the city loop area if you don't like walking.

Yes. Buses are available. Please be aware that in Australia, the word is "transport". "Transportation" was the sentence handed out to many of the early settlers of this country and it still means that.
