My uncle has been an idiot and has lost the username and password to his wireless router, and we need to find the WEP key. Other than reseting the whole router, is there a way to recover the WEP key??

If he didn't change the WEP key there is a chance it's printed on the router label along with the serial number and so on.

But if you ever need to do anything to the router you will need the user and password details, so at some point you'll have to reset the router.

Resetting it will reset the WEP key too... if it wasn't the default one. So having reset the router to gain access, you'll have to set up all of the router settings again AND set all of the WEP keys (router and PCs) again. So before you reset it make sure your uncle hasn't thrown out the account details you'll need to reconfigure the router!

Did he change the username and password at the time of set up? If not, try leaving the username blank and use admin for the password.

If that doesnt work, then he might have changed the password.

In that case, a reset might be the only way - sorry.

Theoretically yes but it's a LOT of effort, ring his ISP and get his details and just reset it and go again.

The recovery process involves often two laptops with specific types of network cards, programs that record encrypted network traffic and programs that try to guess the WEP key based on patterns in the traffic. Did you try admin and admin? Most people who are dopey enough to forget the password never changed it in the first place.

If it is only WEP and not WPA, you can probably 'crack' the password. Its very tricky, so i wont go through it here. Just search for it on the internet
