Britishers started a company named East India Company.
Captured Maysoor in 1757.
Captured complete India in 1857.
Freedom movement started by Muslims and Hindus since then, Sikhs remained with British.
Struggle remained together till 1906.
Muslim League founded in Dhaka in 1906.
Struggle parted and both Muslims and Hindus tried to get their own interests.
Muslim passed Lahore Resolution (Later Pakistan Resolution) on 23 March 1940.
British Parliament passed Bill to Divide India into 2 parts on 3 Jun 1947.
Pakistan came into being on 14 Aug 1947 and India on 15 Aug 1947.
So at a stretch it took 90 years practically to divide India.

It took only 3 years to divide India into its various states based on languages, culture, food habits, dressing and various other criteria. The job was headed by Vallabhai Patel often called the "Iron man of India" for performing this difficult task within such a short span of time. India got Independence on Aug14th, 1947(Independence day), It was divided into 30 states by Jan 26th 1950(Republic Day)Currently, India is divided into 30 states each having its own language.

I don't know but I struggled with division for a year and a half. Finally got it though and moved on to Algebra.
