This will be for a somewhat gaming laptop. I am not terribly too concerned with graphics as much as i am with how smoothe games will run. The cpu on each will be a intel core duo 2.0 ghz w/ 800fsb, and both have 2gigs of ram. All components are essentially the same except the video card. I have checked out various comparisson charts such as the one on notebookcheck.com but i do not know what to make of the different stats. I know the 8600GS performs better, but with graphics put aside, will the 8600GS really play games SMOOTHER than the 8400g to a point where I can detect? I am not a huge gamer, but would like to play some newer games, like graw 2 coming out pretty soon, or some fairly high demanding games.

There's a big gaming performance difference between the two. 8400M G has only 8 stream processors and can manage only 1147 marks in 3D Mark 06. 8600M GS is much faster w/ its 16 stream processors and scores 2743 marks in 3D Mark 06. It should play newer games better.

High marks translate to faster frame rates (fps). The faster the fps, the smoother is the game that is displayed on the screen. You can not put graphics aside because the game is actually just 3D graphics but highly accelerated such that it has the appearance of video on the screen.

I would go for the 8600GS. Primarily due to the fact that it has a bigger number AND more letters, it's better.
