It's the same "mechanism" that will give you red sunsets. The dense and humid air at the horizon is more transparent to the longer wave light (red) than the shorter wave light (blue and violet)

The moon appears red during a lunar eclipse because red-orange light is good at penetrating the earth's atmosphere, a 30-mile thick layer of gases. All colors of light from the sun are deflected around the earth by gas molecules in the atmosphere, but reds and oranges are the only colors that survive the long trip through the atmosphere without being scattered away. The same process creates pretty sunsets. During a lunar eclipse, reddish light that continues around the earth projects on the moon when it's in the umbra. If an astronaut was standing on the moon during a lunar eclipse, he or she would see a circular red sunset rimming the dark sphere of the earth.

I saw that you were in Toronto, then I went outside (I am in Oregon) to look at the Moon and I knew the answer right away (there were 2 possibilities)

You were looking at the moon near the horizon, weren't you? The light from it passes through a lot of atmosphere when it hits Earth, compared to when it's high in the sky. This light, which normally looks white, interacts with earth's lower atmosphere more toward the blue end of the spectrum, causing some of it to be filtered out leaving the light with a more red color.

The other possiblity was lunar eclipse. I answered someone's orange moon question during the last lunar eclipse in March, so I knew it was unlikely, that's why I went outside to check.

Next time you see a red moon, I bet it's low in the sky again.
