I think every country comes in for criticisms from other people. This is not usually to the people as individuals but to the country as a whole, perhaps because of foreign policies or actions of their government. I think this is a bit of a two way thing. As a resident of the UK there are often not very nice remarks made about this country both from Americans and others. I appreciate that these are individual people and do not represent the country as a whole, but never the less they still leave an impression in ones mind. Also if a criticism is made of America or it's policies, Even in a polite respectful way,There are some who immediately reply in a most vitriolic way, asking who are we to criticise, who won the wars and so on.,that America can do no wrong and if we don't like it we can do whatever. . This sort of attitude I think gives others a completely wrong picture of Americans as a whole. I have friends and in laws who are American, and I meet some of their friends, and although their customs may be a little different to here, they are only minor and basically they are the same as most English people. I still think the biggest source of complaint against you is the foreign policy your government adopts, not you as individual people.

Right now the US is scaring the socks off just about every body on the planet. Read Confessions of an Economic Hit Man by John Perkins and you'll get a very clear idea why.

People in other countries tend to see the average USAmerican as ignorant of the rest of the world. I wonder why.

I live in Asia and there are lots of people here -- and I listen.

I think it's mostly in retaliation to insults posted about the Brits.
I have been to the good old old USA 3 times, twice to NY and once to Conn, I found the vast majority of the people i meet very friendly, kind and helpful and in one particular case a complete stranger drove myself and my partner over 30 miles back to our hotel after asking her for directions cos we were lost !
would not accept nothing for her kindness and even offered to buy us lunch on the way !!
I think a lot of Brits are unhappy with American foreign policy and uncomfortable about the nature of the relationship between Blair and Bush.
That said I would prefer to have you on the inside of the tent pissing out, rather than on the outside pissing in !
So, God Bless the USA and Hands across the Ocean.
xx

I think it may be because most Americans are so very very loud and opinionated, which converts to arrogance. It seems that most Americans are so sure of themselves and have this massive confidence about them. That shouldn't really be a bad thing, but I do believe that because America is seen as the most powerful country in the world, it's people seem to reflect this power within their voices. For example take David Hasslehoff in 'America's Got Talent' he is so so loud. Look at the audiences in cinema's the whole audience shouts with joy at a stunt scene or something spectacular on screen.
This is just a small synopsis of reason.

I have since had two thumbs down, oh dear, I think i'm going to kill myself.

To be honest, the whole British Vs America thing isn't anything more than banter.

I rip it out of every american I know (silly accents, improper use of the word "pants" etc) and they all do it back (silly accents, improper use of the word "pants" .. hang on....) and it's normally in good spirit as we have a lot of airmen round here. They find the whole "over paid, over sexed and over here" thing quite funny so they just play to it now.

I think what your referring to is the large amount of posts from people who oppose America and Britains war on terrorism being the main culprit. But I think I've seen posts of Hatred toward the british and american from just about every nation, normally pretty unfounded.

One girl from pakistan was claiming britain is terrorising her country, she obviously glossed over the whole bit where we (the UK) provide £20 million of relief to pakistan every year.

Fact of the matter is, hatred is bred through ignorance and lack of understanding, and sadly there are too many people in the world who have too much of both!

You can get a 100% accurate answer by acting like a none American and have a chat with an American..then you'd be amazed of the level of arrogance exhibited by the average American..they generate hatred for all other sane Americans

I find everybody is rude about everyone else. It seems to be the way of the world.

However & don't take this the wrong way mot helped at all by the media, Americans have a reputation of being loud, overbearing, controling & obnoxious. Other people just don't like that.

As an American who does not live in America, I get asked allot about why my country is doing the things that it is doing.

In this country, America has always been viewed as a country that only really cares about itself and its interests.

Seeing it from the outside, I do see what they mean. The USA has always had a isolationist stance on the world.

Biggest, well was the biggest economy in the world, but spends the least per capita in world aid.

Just what I have seen and experienced being an American not living in America.

Past history shows that this country has every reason to grateful to the US. I am afraid there are a few boring self righteous bigots with short memories or wilful ignorance airing their pathetic views on Y.A. Such is the the price of freedom I suppose.
