I would like to find a few of the more unusual betta fish for pets, but can't seem to find any locally at pet stores or from breeders in or near my state of New Mexico. Any help would be appreciated.

Your best bet would be to get them directly from a breeder. You'll be amamzed at the difference between a "good" quality betta and those you see in pet stores.

You can try online, but you'll have to pay for shipping, and that increases your cost. Still if you want to give that a try, I like aquabid (a sort of "fishy" ebay): http://www.aquabid.com/

Some other alternatives would be to see if there's a fish club near you: http://fins.actwin.com/dir/clubs.php?c=1 - the clubs have auctions to sell the results of their members' breeding effort and excess equipment. You may also want to see which is the closest local chapter of the International Betta Congress - these are the folks who breed and show bettas - there's none in NM, but there are chapters in neighboring states: http://www.ibcbettas.com/chapters.htm - These folks may be able to connect you with breeders closer to your local area.

First, join the ABC (American Betta Congress) they are the best source of information and livestock for the very best in Bettas. Their fish shows and auctions feature the leading edge of the hobby and a door to the top breeders in the US.
Try your search engine,I'm sure they have a web-site,and membership is not expensive.

You can try online. I found one site a few months ago that had some nice halfmoon bettas and other varieties I never heard of. However, any betta with unusual fin types (those that aren't found in pet stores, will be a bit pricier.

I would suggest http://www.aquabid.com, someone with good feedback ratings (Vinita and Nicebettas are very nice). Aquabid is great because unlike other websites that only use sample photos, you actually get to see the picture of the fish you are going to buy. The prices are also very reasonable.
