Liberal are social progressives who believe in change and support a wide host of social issues such as the woman's right to an abortion, social welfare programs, gun control and the removal of the death penality. While you might meet with different people with liberal leanings, that does not mean that they are complete liberals on all issues - they can have similar stances with conservatives, independents or libertarians. There are also liberals in the classic sense who support the free market but not the social issues.

Liberalism spearheads change and favors progressive reform in society. The earliest liberals in American history were the Founding Framers who believed in the John Lockes, Motesquies in forming a republican government - this tradition of thought provoking change from Massachusetts later spread to the other colonies in a unified rebellion against the mother country. Liberalism can also be seen on the debate over the 'peculiar insitution' during the 19th century which splintered the South and North over the dubious interpretation of the 10th Amendment. Over time, liberalism has been equated with radical change that defied the social norms of each period but it is the inherent changes that still provokes discussion over civil liberties, rights that make our thriving democracy essential

liberals are a politically connected group of degenerates who brought you NAMBLA and the partial birth abortion. Liberals side with the homosexual community and seek total government control over peoples lives. They believe it takes a village, rather than a MOM & DAD to raise a child. LIberals sometimes call themselves "progressives" when in reality, they are not progressive at all. They seek to return America to a welfare state, mingled with a dash of communism and marxism. They decry religion ( Execept Islam) yet fail to realize that secular humanism is a religion.
Liberals have no problem teaching 8 year old boys about homosexuality, or 13 year old girls about abortion, yet have a problem with the pledge of alleigance, and school prayer( Unless you are muslim). LIberals are the ones brave enough to kill unborn children, but not brave enough to kill the enemy.

The term "liberal" is just another one of those words used to classify people who seem to fit in a kind of mold, for those who seem to fear going forward. A liberal is someone who actually believes in the Constitutional Rights of American Citizens. And, to the answerer who added "...believe in partial birth abortion, and the death penalty..." is not correct. Liberals, believe only in the Rights of Women and the rights of their own bodies... called "Choice" not, "abortion." Re: the death penalty... most 'liberals' do not affirm the death penalty - simply because, if even one person is executed and is later found to be innocent - ONE is too many! Killing, in any form is not a good option.

liberal is a term republicans like to use as a put down for anyone that threatens their party.

it doesnt necessarily mean anything about their stances but usually it means they are progressive and thoughtful. not in all cases though.

A "Liberal" is the name a Conservative person calls someone- who doesn't agree with them. If you don't think George Bush has been a good President- then you must be a "liberal". If you think the war in Iraq was a mistake- you must be a "liberal". If you think Hillary Clinton might be a good President- you must be a "liberal". Get the idea? So be CAREFULL what you say around here...-Somebody MIGHT call you- a "Liberal" (Oh my GOD- RUN for your LIVES..! :) )! :)

Liberals are pro abortion, anti death penalty, pro gun control, pro affirmative action, and believe that government is the solution to all of our problems. Conservatives are at the opposite end of the spectrum. Myself, I'm a moderate.
