That would be a blue screen of death (BSOD). it shows an error code that can searched on the net to find the problem, It could be hardware or software. The only way to find out is to search it. Have him write it down and google it. I doubt it'll force him to buy a new pc.

Blue screen does not mean you have to buy a new PC. Try booting into safe mode. Pressing F8 at the boot up screen. Once its booted to safe mode,If you have installed anything new remove it. IE programs drivers ETC. This is only very recent things within a day or so.
After that try and restart it from safe mode. Sometimes windows wil restart again after it is shut down in safe mode. IF it still blues screens try and read the error or at least the last part of it. If you can give post some of the Error message we can assist you better.

A lot of times, this is a hard drive issue, and of course they can be tested and replaced.

If it's a software issue, use IOBIT's software to see if it can fix what's wrong. It's a free piece of software that works really well. http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscareper.html

If you decide to format the drive, or use the Recovey Disks, make sure you copy off all their pictures and files first!!!

the safest thing would be to reformat the computer. it will get rid of any other errors on the computer as well it reset it to its factory setting. Simply, insert the recovery disk that came with the computer and follow the easy steps!
