My fish are now about 2 years old. I did,nt realise they could live as long. Any fish we has when were kids usually only lasted a few months at the most.

Mine are both around 4 years old now. My little sister won them both on a hook-a-duck on a travelling carnival four years ago. They usually live about 3 days, so I'm VERY surprised. They've only lived in a little plastic bowl with some gravel since we got them.

Fact: The oldest living Goldfish to date was a goldfish named Tish owned by Hilda and Gordon Hand of Thirsk, N. Yorkshire, England. Tish lived for 43 years after being won at a fairground in 1956. (strangely, Thirsk is close to where I live)

My Partner and I have had our 3 goldfish for 9 years now and 2 of them are about 7 inches long. The third is a lot smaller so must be a lady. We call her Posh 'cos she is so small.
We only have to say 'come on babies, do you want feeding?' and they are at the top of the tank going Gloop, Gloop, Gloop! How sad are we?
We do actually have other interests though like snail racing lol!

I inherited 2 goldfish when my mum died. One was 5 when it died, and the other was 10.
The reason most goldfish don't live long apparently is because they are not looked after properly. I read in a book once that people get fish because they think they are easy to look after, but they are actually quite complicated.

You must be taking really good care of them, then. I really want one, but was always afraid it would die. (That's why I got a parrot. Unless he eats to many Cheetos, he's good for seventy years.) But now I see a goldfish can live for ten years. I think I will get one. The website says overfeeding is the leading cause of death, but I bet bad water does it too. I need to research this more now before I commit myself to fish-parenthood. What kind of bowl do you keep them in?

Sorry, this wasn't really an answer, but I was interested...

""Goldfish have an average life span of between 5-10 years. The oldest known goldfish lived to 41 years of age. The average goldfish is fairly small but they can grow up to a foot in length.""

Beleive it or not, your goldfish is still very young. Fancy goldfish should live at least 10-20 years, while common goldfish live as long as 40 years. You must give it space to grow. Yours sounds hardy, so give it AT LEAST 20 gallons or more, and it will become big and admirable -- people will really be impressed. If you leave it in a 10 gallon it will die young and stay tiny and stunted, and they are in a lot of pain.

I don't have any right now, but two that I had in an aquarium previously, Phantom, a 9" white comet and Lucy, a red-cap oranda both lived for 9 years. (the record for a goldfish, by the way, is 43 years!)

You must be taking good care of yours - keep up the good work!

Goldfish can live up to around 60 years of age given the right care. mine is just over a year, and yours seems to be off to a good start. its true, goldfish that are underfed live longer than those that are over fed. Take care of yoru goldfish and do some occasional research and you'll have many happy years with it. enjoy!
