We were having this discussion over the weekend at the nude beach (an appropriate place, given the thousands of male and female nipples on display) and nobody seemed to have an acceptable answer. Not only couldn't we figure out why guys have nipples, but none of us knew if males in any other species have them.

Thanks for answering...and bare hugs to you all!

All mammals, male or female, have nipples. The reason being in the mothers womb, we all start out as females( a default setting, like in your cell phone for example). The male genes determine whether it's male or female. Thank you for the bare hug offer, but my wife gives me all I need.

All mammals have nipples, male and female. The reason all have them is the same reason we all have other similar parts as well. It is certain hormones produced on the XX chromosome that cause the full development of the breasts. Men produce different hormones due to their XY chromosomes and do not develop the breasts. There are certain disorders where a hormone imbalance is present in men and their breasts do develop, this can be treated with the proper therapy.

As to the "we all start out female" comments, I have to say that statement is completely false.

When the egg is fertilized it is either an X chromosome (female) or a Y chromosome (male). There is no mystery "I was female but decided to go male a few weeks later chromosome". The traits may not be present for one to see until weeks or even months into the pregnancy but gender is decided upon at the moment of conception.

Yes, they do.. Apes for instance.. just in some species they're more vestigal than others. As for why we have them, it's because a human fetus (or Zygote even) contains all the information to be either sex, and that's determined relatively late, so that males have nipples, but they don't work, the sex organ elongates and becomes a penis, the labia become the foreskin, ovaries drop and become testicles.. The vaginal opening closes and becomes the perineum in males, etc.

And um.. thank you for the bare hug.

Males of cats, dogs, bears, apes, mice, whales, seals and many other mammals have nipples but you may not see them conveniently in most of the species because they walk on four legs and their chests are covered with thick hair. In the case of male guerillas, magnificent nipples are visible as they stand rampant and display their anger by striking their chest.
Female's breasts are distinguished from males' by the quantity and the quality of fat tissues and the glands that produce milk in them. The nipples are superficially the most similar organs among the sexuality connected parts of both sexes. Nipples are very sensitive organs in both sexes. They stand erect in cold and also as they are stimulated by an external object. They do not react sexual stimulation alike sexual organs but most people find their stimulation very erotic. Men may not reach an orgasm due to the stimulation of nipples but it surely enhances their sexual pleasure.
I hope you remember to discuss the elaborate knowledge you got here in your next nude beach event. Also never fail to have fun with the guy's nipples.

To tell you the truth, nobody really knows. The best explanation I've been able to find (and frankly it doesn't explain very much) is that nipples aren't a sex-linked characteristic. In other words, nipples are just one of those sexually neutral pieces of equipment, like arms or brains, that humans get regardless of sex.

Human nipples appear in the third or fourth week of development, well before the sex characteristics. (The sex hormones start to assert themselves at seven weeks.)

I always Considered a male and female diffrent from the waist down, I dont rally see breasts as nudity on women, if they are showing anything south of the border that is nudty same with men, that is the same argument that made it possible for women in certain places in canada to walk around topless if they like.

this query could desire to have been asked in adult males's wellness in spite of the reality that i anticipate yahoo's procedures of directing questions is fairly inefficient.
