i love rap, and anything else besides country. i think that people who hate rap either..
1. haven't heard good rap.. i think that most people, mainly the older generations, only hear the crap on the radio or on mtv. so they generalize rap as vulgar music that focuses on drugs and sex.
2. they think that listening to it makes you a "poser"
3. just don't have good taste in music

EDIT: wow after reading a few answers by some seriously ignorant people i feel that i need to add some more...

first of all, rap DOES require talent, and a lot of it.. just like another other type of music. but i totally agree that the $hit you hear on mtv is garbage, i absolutely hate it. however, you cant hate on the game, tupac, snoop, dre, rakim, nas, biggie, gang starr, krs-one, n.w.a., and quite a few more legit rappers. their lyrics are not "mush."

any track done by the rappers i listed above have a lot of meaning in their songs, its not the crap you hear on the radio like .."this is why im hot, this is why im hot, im hot cuz im fly, and you aint cus youre not"

legit rap is more like..
"why am i fightin to live, if im just livin to fight
why am i tryin to see, when there aint nothing in sight
why am i tryin to give, when no one gives me a try
why am i dyin to live, if im just livin to die"

there's definitely a difference. rap takes talent, and it is good music if stay away from the mainstream stuff.. i dont think rap is hurting anyone who can think for themselves.

Nas said Hip Hop IS DEAD... which means the idea not the industry.. there are socially conscious rappers.. not sure if papoose is gona become mainstream but here... hopefully he will make it to mainstream since he collaborated with Snoop Dogg.. he still has a message besides, he just did it to get radio play.

RIP to Sean Bell
RIP to Kathryn Johnston
RIP to Amadou Diallo
The list goes on
Change gon' come

No justice, no peace
Another black man shot dead in the streets
Make the whole hood feel sad, its sadness
But we feel mad, its madness
Mike Oliver said his gun jammed, he the main one
12 year veteran and dont know how to use a gun, think we dumb?
If ya clips was loaded to the top, and your gun jammed, how ya fire 31 shots?
Say you shot at the man, cause you thought he was strapped
But you killed a man cause you thought he was shooting back
Black America, what type of garbage is that
The police academy arming these fools with gats
If your reason was, you thought he carry a gun
That mean you killed him for nothing, cause he aint have one
Im sick and tired of being sick and tired son
Hope change get here before the revolution come!

Patrick Lynch is an asshole, he siding with the cops
He said they wasn't wrong for firin' all 'em shots
Change Gon' Come (50 Shots) Lyrics
He said if they felt a threat they 'posed to pop
and they should continue shooting until the threat stop
The nerve he got, another word said, they should continue shooting until Sean Bell was dead
Bloomberg spoke, but we expect him to
He said 50 shots was unacceptable
And he said nobody know how to feel and be another race
They don't respect that, they call it haemoth disgrace
Press conference infront of everybody, he responded faster than his predecessor Mayor Giuliani
Some say he spoke it illogically, he got some better manners
but lets see if we get some better policy
Don't fall for it, its all tricknology
Hope the change get here, before they try to body me

The law states a cop is not permitted to shoot at a moving car
It don't make a difference if its coming straight at him, cause if they shoot the driver a 4000 pound car could cause more drama
But when i heard Charles Barron speak, I believe
he said, "If we gotta bleed, then others gotta bleed"
Five cops placed on administrative leave
But they murdered a father, left behind two seeds
Why was the cops in the club, drinkin' a bottle?
Why was the 41 shots shot at Diallo?
John Podhoretz from the New York Post
Wanna know why Bloomberg and Al Sharpton still close
I read his article, he question it
Why was Bloomberg surrounded by African-Americans?
I guess the loss of a life was a Mayg
Called Sharpton a race-hating-cop-hater

oh my *GOODNESS* if ONE more person blames rap music for women acting nasty, I am going to shank them. Rap music does not cause those women to line up at the door outside the production site for those music vidoes. Rap music does not cause people to kill each other. Rap music does not make people curse and do other vulgar things. Those are choices made by THOSE people who want to do those things, so stop blaming rap music for it. Rap music doesn't degrade women, those women degrade themselves. No one is forcing anyone to writhe and gyrate their scantily-clad bodies, they do it because they WANT to. And 99.999999% of the nonsense you see on tv and hear on the radio day to day POORLY represents the rap and hip hop culture. That's not what rap and hip hop is about. When people attack rap, its because they are judging by what they see on tv. They are judging what they don't know. If they would listen to some artists like Lupe Fiasco, Papoose, Styles P, Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, and Beanie Sigel, then maybe they would think differently. I don't judge rock music based on Limp Biskit and Panic! at the Disco because I know they don't represent the rock culture. Anyone who judges an entire genre of music based SOLELY upon what they hear on the radio obviously isn't a real music fan anyway, and obviously isn't worth my time. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but there is a HUGE difference between a knowledgeable opinion, and a biased judgement. And I'm going to leave it at that.

Because it's easy to pick on people that are mad and cannot express themselves in a polically correct manner or a way that is against the status quo. That really stinks, as well as the people who judge before they listen and try to understand what the artist is trying to get across. If you dont like what they have to say ... dont buy it .... dont hate them because of it ... just ignore it. Life is too short to waste time on hating someone for their point of view ... no matter much you disagree with it.

I personally don't care for rap. The main reason is that the rappers talk about things such as killing cops, VERY PERSONAL INFORMATION ( like intimate things). To me the rappers are just plain NASTY AND VULGAR!!!!!
Another thing that I find VERY ANNOYING is the fact that they think they have to have it cranked up to as loud as they can get the radio to go. ( lol, by the time these people are in their 40's and 50's they won't be able to hear as they will have permanent hearing damage)
I took a circuit training class at college this last semester and the coach put on rap - but it was not offensive to me. Believe me, if I would have found it offensive - I would have spoken up!!!
Everybody has music that they like and don't like - I just believe that the rappers have gone way overboard on the way they present the subject matter.
Hope this answers your question.

because they have nothing better else to do with their lives and they rather listen to that rock and metal garbage that promotes evil and the devil, but don't worry about what people think about the best genre there is thats thier problem
and they need a life, because hip hop/rap is the best ever hands down

The first rap songs talked about the issues in society, especially with minorities like African Americans and Latinos.

It also talked about the challenges of woman, men and ever day bigotry.

i don't like most rap, but i don't like some of the other genre's also. it's not so much the sound, it's the things they say. a lot of rappers talk about ho's and pot, so i don't listen to them.

i think that's why a lot of people attack rap. i believe rap, over any other genre, has lyrics about negative things.

I hate the profanity, ignorance, violence, degredation of women, criminal culture, Ebonics, and excessive bass blaring out of passing cars. It's actually not even music. It's mostly rhyming to a looping beat, and maybe some stolen melodies thrown in there. You like that? You would be proud to have your children and grandchildren listen to that garbage? Shame on you! I don't like heavy metal, hard rock, punk, and whiny country music either.
