Check your Manuel for the engine oil crankcase oil capacity and will give you the correct amount. If you want the easy solution a 4 cylinder motor will usually take about 4, a six cylinder 6, and a 8 cylinder you guessed it about eight. This will at least be the amount you will want to buy. But the usually will take a little more or less so use this example so you don't over or under fill. Lets say you have a 6 cylinder car here is what you do add 5 quarts of oil start your vehicle let run for a minute this will make sure your oil filter and crankcase have the oil to capacity. Then check your dipstick it should give you some reading add the oil and keep checking until you are at the full line. Next time you have a vehicle problem take it to another mechanic that *** could have caused you vehicle a great deal of harm leaving the oil out.

The answer is 5 quarts of oil.....
Your mechanic shouldn't have even said that the car was "Done" if there was NO oil in it..!!!! Also, someone said to just add a few more ---Don't do that... FILL it with oil to the top of the dipstick...Pull dipstick out and you'll see where the Full line is and since you said that you put 1 in - you'll need 4 more.......No question!! Also; Did you put 10w30 in? That's the weight or thickness of the oil. Ask someone that knows what they're talking about at a reputable Car parts etc. store (name - Murrys, Pepboys etc. depending on where you live)what all weather oil would be best..
Sorry but any Good mechanic would not forget to put the oil back in an engine ~ Ever...
BTW ~ 1 quart is barely enough oil to re lubricate the engine parts which keep it from seizing up and breaking the main engine block..
Have the car running as you check the dipstick after you put the oil in.

It depends on the car but 1 is definitely not enough. You can not drive a car with no oil because the engine will seize up and you won't be going anywhere. A mechanic would definitely know this. He had to put some in if you were able to drive it away. You're going to need at least 3 or 4 more. I'd say put 3 in and check your dipstick. You can then add more if needed. Otherwise just bring it to a different garage and have someone look at it for you.

well, it definitely varies but if I were you, I would run the car for a little bit and shut it off. Then, check the dipstick, if it is at the very bottom or not on the stick, add another quart. If it is in the middle, you are good. If you just got your valves fixed, you may experience a little knocking noise. It doesn't mean you don't have enough oil, things are just too new and need to be broken in.

Check your manual in the "specifications" or "oil" sections because it depends on the car. It should say how many quarts of oil it takes. Generally, each bottle of oil is a quart. Not that all cars are the same, but I know that my cars take about 4 to 5 quarts each (total capacity). One is a 1.6L engine and the other is a 2.8L displacement engine.

you are an automotive genius...check the dipstick, its the long metal thingy that goes into the little tube thing on your motor...no, not the one with the red end but the one with the yellow end...it has markings near the bottom of it...add oil...start with 4 quarts, or 3 more bottles...check your dipstick, the yellow one...if oil is not on it yet then add another quart (bottle)
ya know what, forget about it...let me just start by saying that if you just got suckered into a valve job after your timing belt (not a chain mind you) broke then you need to do something about that first...and if your mechanic didn't add oil to the motor after he did the job and he let you drive off...thats worthy of a new/ free engine from the mechanics shop

It depends on what type of car you have, however check the dip stick and keep checking it after each quart of oil, until it is at the full level, usually 4-6 quarts for most cars.

If by bottles you mean quarts, you will need at least 4 quarts if it is a 4 cylinder and maybe more, look in the owners manual you have in the car under fluid capacities.

Cripe!!!!!!
What else didn't the "mechanic" do?
What kind of idiotic shop would do this?
.
Do not drive the car until the proper amount of oil is in the engine!
At the very least, add oil until the dip stick reads the correct amount.
Then read your owners manual.
If you don't have one, get one!
.
BTW--everyone!
don't ask questions about cars unless you give the year, make and model of the car and engine size etc.
.
