I've heard a lot of people say they don't believe in evolution because of their religion, and others say evolution disproves Christianity.
Is it really one or the other? Why?

Because too many people are taught one way or the other growing up and they are too stubborn and arrogant to admit they might not be completely right.

To me, creationism theory is as ridiculous as evolution. I'm pretty sure everything on earth was not created at the same time, so there goes Creationism as described by the bible.
Darwin evolution is wrong too because, contrary to popular belief, there is NO evidence of the "in-between" steps in new species formation. Random mutation within a species doesn't adequately explain how ape became man (assuming for now that's what happened). Or from sea creatures with no internal skeleton (like clams) to those with internal skeletons (fish).

I think both creationism and evolution has some truth to it, aka Intelligent Design. Either that, or we were transported here long ago by aliens and bred as a slave species to mine gold for them (this is actually a theory by a scientist I heard on a radio talk show)

For some strains of "Bible-believing" Christianity, yes. They consider the Bible inerrant--that is, it means EXACTLY what it says. When it says light came before the sun, well, that's how God did it. And when it twice says God made Man directly, He absolutely did. So there's no room for God making our bodies indirectly, by letting natural law evolve them.

The main alternative Christian theory is infallibility--what the Wikipedia calls "limited inerrancy." That mainstream position is totally compatible with science of any kind. Catholics, Orthodox, and lots of others get along fine with the idea that there CANNOT be any contradiction between true science and true theology, because God both made the world and revealed His theological principles. If it looks like there's contradiction, all it means is that one or more theorists needs to look harder.

The basic evolution theory is that man originated from a more primitive form, contrary to most religious beliefs that man was created as is by a higher being, which is commonly referred to as creationism. I won't even pretend to be an expert, but I've noticed quite a few people confuse natural selection with evolution. Evolution is the changing from one species to another, and Charles Darwin himself is quoted as saying it can't be proven. Personally I'm still open to the debate, and have yet to see or hear of concrete evidence.
