I don't know WHERE you get your information. the TRIBE itself gets SOME funding from ol uncle sam, for things like ROADS, Clinics (so we don't gota go into town an bother the good white folks) Second hand books for the ranshackle schools that are STILL on MOST rez.
College funding from the govt amounts to about $500 a YEAR.
IF your tribe has the money they MIGHT pay for some of your school, BUT it's like making a deal with the army. Say you wanna go to med school, they pay for 2 years you serve 4 in the clinic. Law school? tribal LAW. NONE of it's FREE.
we pay taxes just like everybody else UNLESS we're good indians and stay behind that damn fence. THEN you only don't pay FED taxes on your work check.
and NO we don't ALL have casino's. Those of us that have land on the rez guess what. you can own your house but that land is in "federal trust status" means you can NOT get a mortgage on it, no HOME LOAN. none of it.
as for japan, they paid for it the same way we did, IN BLOOD.
2 words, look them up. Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

it is not all that good. They suffer from poverty, alcohol and drug abuse. most of the time the tribal funds they receive when they turn 18 are spent on beer, and a truck. Native Americans will never be the once proud people they were, regardless of what government/casino money they get.
Also Japan is not the only country that has an unsettled debt, America owes every black person 40 acres and a mule. Personally I don't believe this is a debt that should be paid, but I figured some one was thinking it so I threw it out there. :)

I think you need to do somemore research.
1. The Federal Government has continually cut the monies given to the various Native American Nations or Tribes.
2. Many of the Native American Nations or Tribes are poor.
3. Casino money is used to replace the money the Nations and Tribes used to get from the government. And most of it is used to provide services to the members of the Tribe. ie: better medical care, dialisys centers, housing etc.
4. The majority of Native Americans living on reservations live below the poverty level. The average yearly income for a Navajo living on the reservation is $4000.00
5. Native Americans are the ONLY ethnic group in the world that have to carry a card to prove they are Native American.
As far as Japan is concerned, water under the bridge, the Native Americans are still living under the bootheel of the government in this country...

I'm confused. Is this a question about Native Americans, or is this a criticism of Japan?
The "perks" that Native Americans "enjoy" isn't a payment of a debt. Is affirmative action a payment? Is welfare restitution? If you forcefully remove people from their homes, deposit them in a place where they cannot sustain themselves, feed themselves, or house themselves, deny them education, or even the right to participate in the governing pro cess, don't you think that you bear some responsibility for them?
So, after generations of dependancy, now they can get some help getting an education, they can run for office, and they can develop ways of sustaining themselves through business, you are seeing it as a "perk". Have you even seen a reservation? These hellholes were the governments idea of the "promised land" for Natives. The indians persevered, and tried to grow food on barren land, tried to hunt empty prairies, tried to rebuild their culture, tried to assimilate, but the devastation was too complete. In so many cases, there was just too little left, and they had no choice but to depend on the government. This became their new way of life. It is only recently that they have been able to take steps to become true citizens of a country that used to be theirs. Even 50 years ago, there was so much discrimination, that it was easier for a black man to get hired than an Indian. Indians were considered dirty, uneducated, and unreliable. Well, go to Many Farms, Arizona and try to find something growing besides dust. Look at the condition of the "school". Check the unemployment rate, and count the number of people with health insurance.
How can you be so shallow?

Gowd! These statements are so full stereotypes and misconceptions, it is hard to believe that a rational person would promote such bigotry.
1. American Indians (First Americans) do not have the most perks in America. If being the poorest minority and the least educated in the US wins, they are definitely winners. Only 2% of all American Indians go to college. College money is reserved for individuals who live in traditional communities and the other 82% live in urban areas and don't get a dime.
2. Pity the First American that still lives on the reservation. Only 7% of over 560 federally recognized tribal nations have casinos to suppliment their poor members. The average gross annual income on the "Rez" is around $5,000. America has yet to address the third-world conditions in its own backyard. Why do we spend billions on aid all over the world and can't halt the extermination of our own indigenous people?
3. Japan lost the war and won the peace. We are still paying for it; not only with income taxes that were first implemented to pay for WWII after the war. Also we spend way too many US dollars buying Japanese products; they won't buy any of ours so let's not buy theirs.

I'm a status Native American, and I'm saying that life is not how I would like it. The government is paying me back financially for my ancestors that died too young, but where is the tradition that died along with them? I'm not happy with simple money that the government gives me. If I had the tradition that my ancestors had, I would not need to have money to sustain myself.
I don't know if you are a Native American or not, but I know from living as one that we do not have it easy. No one does.

Yeah...have you heard about reservation life? Lots of poverty, poor living conditions, alcoholism, and drug use. Not fun, but of course, that's what happens when you subjugate a people, take their land and sense of pride, and replace it with government funds.
Sure, they get free healthcare, but being government healthcare, it's not the best (long waiting lists, underpaid medical providers, you get the picture).
