50-50, either you chose to fight in the war, or you chose to remain in your country and cheer on the war effort.

It depends on which war you are talking about. In the current war, Iraq, the chances are slim, but still the rate is high. Back in the World War when machine gun came out, it was pretty much 100% for those who had to run across the battlefield.

Depends on multiple variables: how well combat trained are you, how well combat trained are your superior officers and fellow soldiers, your current physical/mental state, time of day, your combat location, enviromental factors (the area, the locals....etc).

Also depends on whether your enemy is honorable (uniformed) or dirty (can't tell them from the area locals....like Vietnam and Iraq).

Brush up on your war history: the US NEVER won a "dirty war"....and that's EXACTLY what the Iraq war is: DIRTY.

To even be given a chance at success in a dirty war, you got to toss the PC and honor bound glory stuff; these pratices will get you killed--as evidenced every day. To win a dirty war, you got to be DIRTIER, nastier and cold blooded calculating. You got to know your enemy well.....then watch your vision change....you'll peg out the bad guys from the locals.

Depends on what type of war.

Conventional like WWII: 30% chance of getting killed

Insurgent-type like Iraq: 20% of getting blown up

Nuclear: 99% chance of being reduced to ashes

In 'Nam, I was shot twice. You didn't think about it or you'd go nuts. You cried, you swore, you prayed, when the time came, you went out and did your duty and didn't think about it.

You saw your buddies in body bags and didn't think, you stopped and said a silent farewell and wondered if someone would do the same for you but, you kept going.
I think it was Gen.Patton that said "war was hell" he couldn't have described it better.

As in all questions of probability, the answer depends entirely on one's exact position in time and space. I.E. your likelihood of dying in the streets of Baghdad while still being heavily armored and weaponised, is still higher than say, walking to work at your office in WTC on 9-11-2001

Nowadays war is broadly defined as being in a place surrounded by people who hate you. I would say about 75%.

Pick a # between 1 & 6. & then roll the dice. If your number comes up- you lose. -Ask anyone on "Leave" from Iraq. They roll that dice- EVERY day...

If it came down to percentage then I would say about 80-20. It all really matters of how you take care of yourselves and how your skills come into play.
