Please help me. I bought a male beta fish the other day. I set up his tank, conditioned the water, had it at the right temp. everything was prepared correctly. Then two days later the fish was dead as a doorknob. What kind of fish can I get that won't keel over anytime soon? I have a 1.5 gallon tank so I probably only need 1 or 2 small fish.

I think the betta you bought might have been sick, or he died due to stress
I would just bring the dead one back where you bought it, and get another one
If you do get another one, be careful introducing him to his new environment, put the cup or bag with him in your tank, and let him adjust for at least 30 minutes to the water temperature, after that you can let him in your tank
There aren't many other fish you could put in your tank since it is very small

Try either
*2-3 zebra danios
*2 balloon mollies
*3-5 neons
*2-3 micky mouse platy's
*2-3 dwarf platies
But you need for each of these kinds a filter

Good luck

WOW....Betta's are a hardy fish and so easy to care for. So unless the fish already had something wrong with it when you bought it...So here is some info. on Betta's. We own 13 and have had them for two years. They are a labyrinth fish which means they take a air bubble from the surface of the water and drop, use it to breath and release it through their gills. So first off always leave room on the surface so they can get air. A cover on the tank isn't necessary. Because they are not gill breathers...no additives in their water is required! Just use tap water. Temp is a little important because to cold and he will keep sinking to bottom and not want to move (74 to 80 degrees) is what he needs. To hot and you fry him to death. No heater is required unless you keep your home really cold. Never use anything but water to clean his tank...even the outside of it...a paper towel is safe to wipe it dry on the outside. As for cleaning...once a week to every three weeks is fine. Just use a well rinsed cup of luke warm water...net him into it...rinse his bowl with luke warm tap water and use your hand to swish his gravel, shells, glass, or whatever to stir the waste out...refill with lukewarm water and you are done! Just dump him back in. Betta's can live up to nine years if you don't over fed them. A pellet a day is about right a few more here and there or skipping days won't hurt him either. I would try a new one with this info. We have lost some to with mistakes...if we had them all we would have 20, but watch out...cats will go after Betta's.

if it is a brand new tank get some cycle fish, any fish that is cheap and can survive hard conditions, ask the staff at the shop, and have them in there for a few weeks, or if you can't wait at least have them in there for a week, and then the chemicals should be right for you to add whatever fish you want, get an ammonia tester that should help too

If a beta fish died then you need to take it back. They are tough cookies. I would get another one and most don't require that much attention.

I would try another Beta. They're pretty hard to kill. Also mollies and goldfish (but they leave a very messy bowl).
