My generic answer:

Scetch details of your main characters - looks, mannerisms, background, etc. Write the details down - or even draw them if you are a visual person.

Then take your main character or characters and imagine them in some odd/out of the ordinary (out of your current work's context) places or scenarios – anything goes! Write down ideas on what would have to happen to your type of character or how they would react to the scenario you placed them in.

This may seem futile, but it will help you flesh out your characters further and give you insight into what you may want to happen to this type of character in a potential story AND WHAT TYPE OF STORY YOU WANT TO WRITE!. You may even come up with multiple story lines and can see if one of them just seems to be the best or easiest to continue

Strong well-crafted main characters can inspire readers to love your story as well as drive you to write a great story for these imagined beings to be in! :-)

This should get you going. Then you may want to write an outline of you story (a kind of synopsis), including the ending. I have heard that John Irving writes his endings first, down to the last line, and works backwards. The idea of the outline is to give you goals as you proceed. Writing the ending first may give you the "spark" you seek - and also give you something to strive for.

Girl, I agree with the second comment. Writing a story isn't really about its genre, its about the story. The categorization comes later. I suggest that you write a story in the style which you enjoy the most: do you enjoy stories with magical elements? or maybe you want them set in reality while discussing current social issues? or perhaps you are partial to coming-of-age novels where we journey with a young girl/boy into adulthood?

It seems that fantasy and sci-fi is in nowadays. But it isn't a matter of putting in elements. I'm afraid you might need to start at the very start.

Goodluck!

Here's my opinion.

If you're writing a book and you don't know what genre it is, stop writing. Despite what some people might claim, you can't generically plug a book into any genre, without making it a horrible book.

"gee just add some laser guns its sci-fi"

"Could you elf it up a little? Those Tolkien books are sellers!"

Two phrases never uttered about a great book.

Don't worry about the genre for now. It's better to be original anyhow, and write something no one's done before.

You have the idea. Get writing, before your muse leaves you.

My favourite genres are horror, fantasy, urban thrillers.

Hmmm. I like fiction (not chick lit), fantasy from the 1940s, hard core science fiction, supernatural romance, mythology, unusual mysteries, historical fiction, medieval fiction, and history.
