So your question is: "Is a rock alive, why or why not?" Before I get into this I would like to know what kind of class doesn't teach you this and expects this to be a difficult question. So here is your report:

To be alive is to have the ability to grow through metabolism, reproduce, and have the power to adapt to the environment. A rock has none of these characteristics, therefore it is not alive.

Here is something to think about: Fire can reproduce and grow yet it is not alive, but has very similar characteristics. I would have at least chosen that as a question to as rather than a rock.

One of the requirements to say that a thing lives is that it can reproduce itself.
A rock cannot :-)
It's as simple as that...

A rock does not ingest food, or grow, or make copies of itself. It does not have DNA. It is not alive.
