See, I was always taught that Jesus started the church. He started the Christian church, and it is the original church. Everything else branched off of it.

In the beginning there was The Church. Then there was the Great Schism of about 1,000AD, and there were two Churches - the Eastern (Orthodox) Church and the Western Church. The Western Church is what is commonly called the Catholic Church. Both claim to carry authority in an unbroken line from Jesus and St Peter. Both claim that the other is heretical, and not the true faith. Which one you believe is a matter for you, but if the Eastern Church is correct, Catholicism started with whoever was Pope at the time of the Schism. If the Catholics are right their church was founded by Jesus, St Paul and St Peter.

Christianity evolved into Catholicsm at the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D.
"Concerning those who have given themselves the name of Cathars, and who from time to time come over publicly to the catholic and apostolic church, this holy and great synod decrees that they may remain among the clergy after receiving an imposition of hands. But before all this it is fitting that they give a written undertaking that they will accept and follow the decrees of the catholic church, namely that they will be in communion with those who have entered into a second marriage and with those who have lapsed in time of persecution and for whom a period [of penance] has been fixed and an occasion [for reconciliation] allotted, so as in all things to follow the decrees of the catholic and apostolic church. Accordingly, where all the ordained in villages or cities have been found to be men of this kind alone, those who are so found will remain in the clergy in the same rank; but when some come over in places where there is a bishop or presbyter belonging to the catholic church, it is evident that the bishop of the church will hold the bishop's dignity, and that the one given the title and name of bishop among the so-called Cathars will have the rank of presbyter, unless the bishop thinks fit to let him share in the honour of the title. But if this does not meet with his approval, the bishop will provide for him a place as chorepiscopus or presbyter, so as to make his ordinary clerical status evident and so prevent there being two bishops in the city. "

Wasn't it St. Peter? Didn't Jesus say to him that he was the rock upon which he would build his church, or whatever? Also, isn't it called "the shoes of the fisherman" when a new pope is selected because Peter was the first pope? Of course, maybe people all think that is just general christian stuff and that catholicism evolved from it, when they got enough power and money to start killing people on their own.

But I do think that Catholics consider Peter the first pope.

St. Peter 70 AD or so.

The council of Nicea was really its official recognized date because it made the church more formal and gave it many practices and rituals and prayers we still do/say today.

The popes founded it; Apostle Peter had long been dead and had nothing to do with it.
