I have bought a house that has some wiring already done for a network (CAT 5).
I am debating as I do renovations compelting the network to all the right locations using gigabit capable wiring, including replacing the CAtT 5. I am not sure I want to go through the trouble and expense when wireless is coming along so rapidly - however, when am I going to be redoing walls, floors and painting again? - thoughts?

For desktop computers, printers, game consoles, and media extenders, wired is by far the way to go. The bandwidth is so much greater and the reliability is far superior to wireless. You may want to concurrently set up a wireless network for laptops, and portable gaming units like the PSP and DS.

In my house we have 3 desktop computers, a printer, a PS2, and a media extender all wired to a Linksys wireless broadband router (it comes with 4 wired-network jacks on the back and we also have a 5-port switch). We use wireless for the PSP, DS, Wii, and guests' laptops. One of the desktop computers used to be connected wirelessly but it was such a pain in the rear that I ran a length of Cat5 to it and resolved all of the connection issues. The only reason the Wii is wireless is it came with a wireless adapter built-on that has been trouble-free so far.

A wired system would be more secure.

But wireless speed is increasing, I have a super G that runs at 108M. It works at a long distance.

The newest wireless spec. is N, which runs much faster still, at great distance. There are some N's on the market, but my last info said the spec has been agreed upon, and those might not be fully compatible later.

Hope this helps!

My router has 4 CAT 5 ports as well, for hard-wire.

I use both wireless and wired at the same time, and lose no performance. I hook to broadband.

I use the wireless out in the backyard with no problems.

Make sure to use the router's tightest security for personal privacy.

My first experience, with wireless was with an unprotected network for web access. It was weak, but reliable. I never found who it was to help them close their door.

A wireless network isn't as secure or fast as a wired network. I would go with making a wired network, but make sure that you use good CAT5 wiring.

Also, if you have two or more laptops, and need Wi-Fi for mobile devices, wireless would be the way to go. And I'm not sure how big your house is, but if it's big, a wireless network would keep a weak signal and would require a signal booster.

Good Luck!!

You should definitely keep your wired network infrastructure. Its much faster and a bit more secure, as many have already said. Also if you have trouble wiring your network into certain areas of your home, you can always connect a wireless network access point to your existing wired network, that way wired or wireless you can still access the same network.

Aside from the fact that no wireless network is secure. (if they want in, they have all the time in the world to run sniffers and exploits against your network). It also depends on the house and the location of the computers. You might end up with poor or no signal in the areas you want it most. Best idea i can think of is grab a wireless router and a usb ethernet adapter and see how it goes. But wire will let you sleep at night. good luck R.

Wireless is simply that, wire-less, in every other counts it humbles in light of wired network, even the "convenience" factor of it is debatable if you are setting one up since it has more software configuration to do and meaning more faux pas can happen. I have really hard time to have it installed. While Ethernet wiring is fine, although I wouldn't need it reno into the walls if I was the one to decide for myself.

wired networking is still the best thing to use.

1.) it is faster than wireless. it speed is 100mbits/second why wireless is lower like 54mb/s

2.) safer from hackers. wireless network can be hack by external factors. while wired network can also be hack it is more safer.

3.) wireless = expensive. wired = cheap

4.) wireless is convenient as you can carry your laptop anywhere in the house but you can have a computer table to work.

Definitely install the wiring, it is way better than a wireless network! I can't tlel you how many wireless networks I've setup over the years and always had someone complaining about signal loss here, getting lag there, it's sickening. That doesn't happen with a wired network!

Absolutely, wired networks are still the most secure option available. (You can't gain immediate access to your Internet connection on all wired networks unless you physically splice a cable and run it for yourself)

If however you keep to yourself an unsecured wifi network, you run into potentially some dolt with a wifi sniffer who could gain access to your network without difficulty.

wired networking is great. only reason people love wireless networking (including myself) is cause u don't have to wire the house) but if you can do that, more power to ya (less latency) I wish i could do one.
