We will have to revisit the off shore drilling and the Alaska drilling. A viable alternative fuel is years off. We are going to be dependent on oil for years to come. At present it takes as much fossil fuel to make a gallon of Hydrocarbon fuel.

The matter is not drilling more or not, if you have enough oil reserve, then you can dig, otherwise you dig for nothing. To eliminate the dependence on oil is very very difficult, to minimize the dependence is possible by:
1) Construction of engines that don't use a lot of gas.
2) Try to find sources of power that don't use oil or gas.

Yes we should! Screw depending on other counties making them rich. Let's use our own resources. However if digging in US is too much for the environmentists then dig right outside of our boarder. For crying out loud China is doing it. Us digging out there isn't going to hurt the environment any more the China digging there.
By the way why can't we do both dig here and look for alternative fuel sources at the same time. This way if one come up with one in the next five years great. However if we don't come up with one for 50 years at least we aren't dependant in the Middle East.

NO, strategically that would be the wrong thing to do.
It would cause us to deplete our own resources, and be forced to import them later. what would happen if we just happened to goto war with a country that is supplying all of our oil? you kind of need the stuff to run war machines.
the high pirce of gas, isn't because of oil shortage, it is because of shortage in refining capacity after oil companies closed many smaller refineries to boost profit margins.
there is no economic incentive to boost supply, and lower profit margin.

NO we should look at alternative energy sources and make Mexico and other countries donate a barrel of oil per day for every illegal immigrant.

It's not the drilling as much as it is the refineries in the US. We haven't opened a new one in a decade. Also, new Nuclear Plants could help.

More drilling just feeds the beast. We should focus on conservation and expanding our use of renewable energy sources.
