I'm thinking of volunteering at an orphanage because I'm thinking of joining politics or being a human rights lawyer. You know, teach these kids to read and find out more about their troubled childhood.
But am I not being selfish, using them for my own gain?
But a lawyer helps people right? And in order to be a human rights lawyer i have to start by volunteering right?

no, i don't think you're being selfish at all, you're gaining professional experience in a productive way . Is a nurse selfish for getting paid to take care of sick people? since you're not getting paid cash, at least you can consider your volunteer experience as an investment that will pay back career wise. Plus, if you want to be a human rights lawyer, aren't you at least a bit interested in worthy causes?

Its a win win situation. You learn they get help. If it will make you understand things better,it will make you a better person, and a better lawyer.

Anything you do in that vein would not hurt, no matter what your motive.
