You can pick off and kill beetles, evening is best, and you drop them in a bucket of soapy water ,don't squash them ,it attracts more. Go after your lawn where they also hide with parasitic nemotodes.

Research 'Surround the home' it is a kaolin clay based product some find very helpful.
Around here fertilizing plants seems to make them less tasty to Beetles.
Also if you have a pond or lake with fish i have a hilarious solution that my brother has found very enjoyable and rewarding. Take a Japanese beetle trap, the plastic yellow kind that you hang a bag below. Trim the bottom of the bag off. Hang the trap above the water so that the open end of the bag is only three or four inches above the surface. The beetles are attracted to the trap, they swarm it and enter the trap fall through it and hit the water surface before they can fly off. Fish love these stupid beetles. Once your fish learn beetles fall into the water there they hang out all day and eat them as they fall. The fish are so happy to eat the beetles here they jump out of the water and get the beetles that fly near the surface. It is very satisfying to watch them get what they deserve! Plus the bag never has to be emptied. Our bag is about 15' from the water's edge. The fish are perch, blue gill and bass, not koi.

Well I just had this same problem and I used a spray bottle, half water and half Lemon Joy dishwashing detergent.
I sprayed my bushes, trees, and roses, and it worked! So far they haven't been back in a week.
I was told this many years ago, but never had the beetle problem till now.
