Yahoo in tandem with say SBC, is a internet service provider through some third party, but Yahoo alone is not an IP. Your modem will not affect how Yahoo runs or operates on your computer. Yahoo is an internet based provider of services, but Yahoo alone (the name), does not provide consumer internet connectivity. (ie. You must use an Internet Service Provider (AOL, NETZERO, Yahoo/SBC, or your local cable company) to gain access to the internet in order to access Yahoo's services.

I am not sure that I understand the question, but let's see.

Choosing Yahoo as an ISP (internet service provider) is not an option, since Yahoo is not an internet service provider.
Yahoo is an internet browser's home page.
You must already be on the internet to view it.

Having your own modem in your computer is a good thing if you are concidering a dial up connection. The phone line will plug into it.
If you are going DSL, you will need a LAN card (network card), or a LAN port on your motherboard.
You plug that, via cat5 cable, into the modem that the DSL provider sends you. You plug the phone line into the modem that the DSL provider sends you.

If you get online, you can go to Yahoo. It doesn't cost a thing.
Happy surfing.
I hope this helps.

I'm hoping that by "IP" you mean "ISP" or Internet Service Provider (and not, Internet Protocol)

As far as changing ISPs, you should have no problem still getting onto yahoo, but you will need some type of internet service.

As far as I know Yahoo themselves do not offer internet access, but rather they offer "Internet services" like e-mail, and web search, etc.

I'm also going to assume that you have a dial-up connection, unless you have an internal cable modem, or DSL gateway, which is rare, and probably isn't the case.

Changing Dial-up providers is really simple, you should only have to change the phone number and username/password you are dialing into. Your provider should go into this in detail with you, and if they are a good provider will take you through step-by-step on how to change this information.

make a long story short: you need an ISP to access Yahoo, even if the ISP offers yahoo services (some do offer inter-connectivity with Yahoo services)

Having an internal modem makes no difference to the Internet Service Provider. To connect to the Internet you HAVE to have an account with a provider. OR use a free wireless hot spot.
Fees vary depending on what type of connection you want. I.E. dial up, ADSL, Wireless. and the speed and download limits you require. Look in your local yellow pages for Internet Service Providers and find out what they offer.

You still have to choose a net server to get on line. Yahoo provides net service but not for free.
