Yes, Houston does have recycling. I live in Houston myself and we've had weekly recycling pick up at from our home in the city for more than 10 years now, they even come by once a month and pick up yard trimmings, etc.

Most stores and schools do have recycling bins and entire dumpster for recycling alone (it's teal and yellow with a cartoon dog photo.) I'm not sure why you wouldn't have recycling pick-up in your neighborhood, but you can request it from the city (see 1st link below.) You also can dial 311 and request a recycling bin and find out about recycling in your area.

Also the link below is for a frequently asked question page and goes into more detail about any questions you may still have.

Amazing , if it doesn't . (Texas IS different, eh?) If there is none , maybe YOU can get it rolling . There's links off the link below . We 're approaching recycling ~ 80% of the wastestream . Might have gone past that, since I last heard . Implementing single-stream recycling made a big difference .The places I've read about, that have trouble, meet resistance because of very particular rules about separation. Eliminate the need for those , & almost everybody is glad to do it .

The upcoming need for a new landfill, or incinerator , prompted much of it. The recycling has extended the life of the county landfill almost indefinitely , & therefore saved a lot of money , and the contentious process of finding a new site . A private company ultimately receives the waste , so there is some profit to be made from recycling .

Btw , the family that has their garbage in the Smithsonian ,( ~2 yrs' worth in a grocery bag!) is that of a former County Legislator, who was chairman of the Solid Waste Committee . It helps to have somebody in authority that wants to solve a problem. ;D

Some neighborhoods (like my mom & dad's) have it. Check out Penn & Teller's piece about recycling on youtube.
