people who are born with the condition called down syndrome generally have three copies of a certa chromosome (chromosome21), rather than the usual two copies. please help me i need to write a 200- word response. help!!!!!

i dont think they know ... genetics is really lagging..
but probably because when you have too much of something your body tend to compensate by supressing and often time oversupressing whatever that is being made, and in this case whatever proteins encoded on C21. down is not always trisomy21 though. in most cases you have two copies of C21 plus an extra chunk of C21 DNA attached. youre getting 3 copies of certain genes but not the entire chromosome.

Hi Deliana. Because Down Syndrome patients have 3 copies of chromosome 21, they potentially will over produce proteins coded for by the genes in this chromosome. Excessive production of some proteins (from the excessive number of genes) may account for some of the signs/symptoms of this syndrome.
