Get a common acid like lemon juice or Coke and go from there. Lemon juice is good because you can illustrate the taste properties. You can dip pH paper in it. And its non-toxic.

To carry up a basic experiment of properties of acids , first you will have to decribe to the student the basic properties of acids :

1-affect indicators : get a blue litmus paper and dip it into a beaker filled with an acid eg. HCl or H2SO4
2-react with metals to give a salt and hydrogen: add the acid to any metal eg. magnesium or calcium or sodium ribbons then collect the gas evolved in a gas jar and expose a lighted splint to it :it burns with a POP sound.
3-react with metal carbonates to give a salt and CO2: so add the acid to CaCO3 or piece of chalk then pass the gas evolved in a beaker filled with lime water : lime water changes from clear to milky
4- acids give colourless solutions
-you should also inform the student that acids are corrosive and it is harmful to taste and acid .
