Not long term, no. You can do it for a short while if need be by changing all of the water in the bowl every 2 days. This will keep the ammonia from killing the fish, but they are very active swimmers that need more space so don't do it for more than a few days.

I agree with MagicMan about the zebra danios.

It is unsafe to keep fish in unfiltered water for a long period of time b/c the powerfilter aids the fish in several ways, since they are not swimming in an open system like a river, ocean or lake, but a closed system or fish tank.

If you are cleaning out your tank completely and need to put your fish in a fishbowl or 3 gallon bucket for an hour while you thoroughly clean out the inside of your tank and rinse and clean the gravel then it would make sense. But all fish need their water circulated with a powerfilter and/or airstone.

The powerfilter helps the fish survive in a tank's closed system by:

1) removing excess debris like un-eaten fish food, chemicals that can become toxic to fish like ammonia, nitrite or nitrate levels. It also removes decaying materials from plants and it also removes fish waste from the water.

2) circulates the water creating more oxygen for fish. Airstones also help the oxygen circulate (although some disagree and see airstones as decoration only, or, a simple bubble machine that serves no purpose).

3) helps good bacteria get established in the gravel bed when the tank goes through its first water cycle which can take anywhere from 4 - 6 weeks.

So if you have zebra danios in a regular fishbowl, I would by a small 3 to 6 inche wide airstone that will help circulate the water, since you can't hang a powerfilter on a fishbowl's circular rim. You will also need to buy air tubing and a motor to connect the air tube to, and connect the other end of the air tube to the airstone.

Do this until you can afford to buy a 10 gallon tank at Petsmart. They sell 10 gallon tank starters that come with a filter, food, net for a good price. Otherwise check out garage sales or craigslist. But upgrade your fish' home when you can afford to, and don't forget to add a powerfilter or airstone.

it can not live too long in the fish bow because danios is warm blooded and they need heater, or you can go to wal mart and buy the whole kit tank probaly aroung 20-30 bucks
