The law is different in every state. Some places you can get a divorce immediately, just sign the paper and pay the clerk five dollars. Some places you must wait a year. Depending on if there are children, lot's of money or assets, or if one person wants to make it longer and harder for the other just to be cruel, it can take a very long time to settle things.

Depends on the state and whether it's a contested divorce, dissolution, or annulment. Children, property, joint accounts and other legal entanglements can make it long. Usually if you have lived in the area for 6 months or more, and have established residency, you can apply for divorce and in about a year, it's done.

You can file anytime but you have to wait 6 months for a judge to finalize it unless one of the persons involved want to contest something...Stard expectance with kids and issues...2 yrs
